ADAS/ SDAS systems and automotive safety

Safety, specifically driving safety are well-known words in our daily life. The field of safety in the automotive industry or land transportation involves a wide range of methods, solutions and hardware-software systems. Generally, safety in the automotive industry includes the active and passive sections. Passive safety solutions have a long history and after a short period have been introduced in the industry. Among the passive safety systems, airbag, seat belt, whiplash protection, and child safety systems are well known, and almost every automobile owner recognizes the importance and role of this systems in the reduction of car accidents impacts. Passive safety solutions are mostly designed to reduce the impact of car accidents.

On the other hand, there are active safety systems that use more advanced technologies. These systems are recent compared to the passive ones and use technologies such as artificial intelligence to detect hazardous situations and effectively react to these dangerous settings.

ADAS or advanced driver assistance systems are a branch of active safety systems. Other well-known systems are automatic emergency braking, anti-lock braking systems, and adaptive cruise control.

Among the most applied ADAS systems are forward collision warning, lane departure warning and traffic sign or road sign recognition systems. These systems target the most dangerous situations in driving that according to statistics cause a big number of accidents. The mentioned driver assistance systems could be easily used to prevent harmful accidents. Statistics suggest that driver inattention to driving is the main risk factor for driving disasters and using driver assistance systems to detect and warn the dangerous situations could significantly be helpful to prevent and reduce the impact of accidents.
